What is wrong with society ?

Having been off these boards fro a few months (studying for my diploma in statistics), I have been reading various Facebook postings, news bulletins etc. My question is – What the hell is wrong with society ?
I have read numerous facebook posts saying how people wished they could just retire away from it all to a deserted log cabin somewhere.
RSPCA here in the UK report that a ginger cat was beaten with sticks by thugs to within an inch of its little life. The cat has recovered and is back with its owners. RSPCA also reported a kitten, rescued from a gang of kids (8-9 year old) who tried to drown it in a bucket of motor oil. Glad to say that Chester survived, and is looking for a new home. The question here is – what the hell is wrong with people ?
Does the divine (regarding how you view it) take a dim view of this type of behaviour, with swift retribution on its way (aka the flood from the bible for instance), or does the divine not generally give a shit ? If its does not give a monkeys, then with whom does the responsibility lie to dish out retribution ?
Here in the UK, it is a common news item that poverty is on the increase, with more and more people using food banks than ever before. My question is, why do the people claiming poverty, having to use food banks etc, all have the latest X-Box, iPhone, plasma telly, Nike Air etc, them complain ? What lesson is required here, how can it be taught, and who’s responsibility is it to teach it.
I know this isn’t much of a post dealing with demonolatry, but I would be interested on thoughts regarding the divine getting involved, and ‘teaching’ so called ‘society’ appropriate values.

I don’t know. Perhaps they were repeating Crowley’s “nine lives” investigation…

They are not poor. …At least not according to any reasonable definition (be it historical or global). They are instead “living in poverty” according to the current (modern and highly localised) government definition of the term (when I last looked, it was something like “anyone with below 60% of the median UK income after housing is taken into account”). This is the origin of those patently absurd headlines. My favourite in recent years was “half the children in Wales live in poverty”. The street kids in Calcutta would be most gratified to learn that their penury is shared by the Adidas-clad, X-Boxed iPoseurs hanging around the Golden Arches in Cardiff.

Well, “the divine” of the Bible did once institute a system of animal sacrifice (and was no vegetarian), but nevertheless had this to say to all aspiring cat-torturers. …And as for the Flood, the Biblical account suggests it wasn’t swift — it was centuries in the making, and came only when finally “all flesh had corrupted its way on the Earth”.

God — according to the Bible — is prone to waiting until things become intolerable (and no, I’m not exactly sure why, but it seems it’s something to do with giving people a chance to mend their ways). I recall that somewhere, one of the psalmists asks exactly the same question as you have (I can’t remember the answer, though).

As for dishing out retribution, if the Bible is correct, then there’ll be plenty of that — not by water this time, but by fire. Dunno what’ll happen to the demons, though: probably the Biblical picture is that since they were effectively created by the Flood, they’ll be punished in the fire.

    Good luck with your diploma.
