Patrons and Matrons Demystified

Within the modern practice of Daemonolatry, the concept of having a Patron or Matron Daemon is often misunderstood—especially by those new to the path who haven’t had formal training, and those coming from other spiritual traditions. In this post, I aim to clarify what Patrons and Matrons are (and are not), outline the different types of Daemonic spirits one may work with and why they’re different. I also want to explain why a Daemonolater is traditionally guided by only one Patron or Matron at a time.

What Is a Patron or Matron Daemon?

A Patron (male) or Matron (female) Daemon is a primary spiritual guide and overseer in a Daemonolater’s practice. This Daemon is not chosen lightly, nor are they interchangeable with every Daemonic spirit you may encounter or work with. Often, a deep spiritual bond is eventually formed with this spirit where the practitioner not only feels it deeply, but where the practitioner may become AS that spirit in the sense that they take on some of that spirits attributes at some point. This is why some people end up with a Patron or Matron that initially appears to compliment them by being everything they, themselves, are not.

Key Points:

  • Singular Relationship: In Traditional Daemonolatry, you may have only one Patron or Matron and it’s a lifelong bond. This relationship is akin to a spiritual mentorship or sponsorship, and is meant to be deep, personal, and enduring.
  • Role: The Patron/Matron acts as a personal overseer, guiding your spiritual growth, self-discovery, and magickal development throughout your lifetime. They are not simply “favorites,” but rather Daemons with whom you have a profound spiritual connection.
  • Selection: Some Daemonolaters are called by their Patron/Matron, while others may discover the relationship through meditation, divination, or direct ritual work. The bond is mutual and based on respect. A lot of times, the spirit and the practitioner have something deeply in common.

It’s important to distinguish between your Patron/Matron and other Daemonic spirits you may work with. Daemonolatry recognizes several roles Daemons can play in a practitioner’s life:

1. Teachers/Guides

  • Definition: Daemons who provide knowledge, insight, or guidance in specific areas of study or practice. Most Daemons will fall into this definition.

Example: You may work with a Teacher/Guide Daemon for a particular magickal operation or to learn a new skill, but this does not make them your Patron/Matron. You may work with them often, but it still doesn’t make them a Patron or Matron. Instead, it makes them part of your personal hierarchy of Daemons that you mesh with.

2. Protectorates (sometimes called Guardians)

  • Definition: Daemons who offer protection—either to you, your home, or your loved ones. Sometimes they step up on their own, other times you call on them for assistance.

Example: You might call upon a Protectorate Daemon during times of spiritual vulnerability or when you need safeguarding, but this is a functional relationship, not a patronage.

3. Patrons/Matrons

  • Definition: The singular Daemon to whom you dedicate your practice, and who, in turn, oversees your spiritual journey. They can provide the function of teacher, guide, and protectorate all in one and you can work with them for all purposes. Sometimes they will step back and allow a Teacher/Guide or Protectorate take over. Even when they step back, they will still be there and will return once your Teacher/Guide, or Protectorate is done imparting their lessons, protection, guidance etc….

Example: While you will work with many Daemons as Teachers or Protectorates throughout your life, your Patron/Matron remains your primary spiritual sponsor. It’s the Daemon that shows up again and again and again. It is always in the background watching.

Why only one Patron OR Matron (not one of each): The tradition of having only one Patron or Matron is rooted in the belief that the relationship should be focused, sincere, and deep. Dividing your dedication among multiple Daemons can dilute the connection and hinder spiritual progress because it may scatter your attention to the wrong things or send you toward the most ineffective path for growth. You’ve heard the phrase that a man cannot serve two masters? Or jack of all trades, master of none? It’s the same concept.

This does not mean you cannot work with other Daemons in different capacities. However, your Patron/Matron is your primary spiritual anchor—your mentor, confidant, and guide.

Common Misconceptions

  • “I can have multiple Patrons/Matrons.”
Incorrect. While you may work with many Daemons, only one holds the role of Patron or Matron.
  • “All Daemons I work with are my Patrons/Matrons.”
Incorrect. Teachers, Guides, and Protectorates serve different purposes and are not synonymous with a Patron/Matron.
  • “I must choose my Patron/Matron.”
Not always. Sometimes the relationship is revealed through spiritual work, or the Daemon itself makes their presence known. Other times it’s a mutual choosing. By this I mean that, ultimately, you are the one choosing the relationship.

Understanding the unique roles of Daemonic spirits is essential for your practice. While you may engage with many Daemons as Teachers, Guides, or Protectorates, your Patron or Matron is a singular, deeply personal relationship that shapes your spiritual journey.

How Does One Discover/Choose Their Matron or Patron?

Discovering or choosing a Patron or Matron is a deeply personal and sometimes gradual process. Unlike picking a favorite from a list, this relationship is about genuine connection, mutual respect, and spiritual alignment.

Here are some common approaches:

  • Self-Reflection & Meditation: Spend time in meditation or contemplation, focusing on your spiritual needs, personality, and goals. Ask yourself which Daemonic archetypes or energies resonate with you on a deeper level.
  • Study & Research: Read about various Daemons, their attributes, histories, and associations. Sometimes, a particular Daemon’s qualities may align closely with your own path or challenges.
  • Ritual & Divination: Working with many Daemons over a long period of time can help you find your patron. You may also ask the Daemonic Divine or the Daemons themselves to reveal if a Patron or Matron is willing to work with you. Sometimes they’ll answer, sometimes they’ll be cryptic.
  • Signs & Synchronicities: Pay attention to recurring symbols, dreams, or experiences in your life. Sometimes, a Daemon will reach out first—through dreams, meditative visions, or repeated references in your studies.
  • Mutual Agreement: The most important aspect is that the relationship is mutual. Just as you seek a Patron or Matron, the Daemon must also be willing to take you on as a devotee. Consent and respect are central.

Remember: There’s no rush. Building this relationship takes time, patience, and sincerity. It’s perfectly normal to spend months or even years discovering who your Patron or Matron truly is. I’ve heard a lot of advice here: Work with at least 100 different Daemons before you rush to a Patron or Matron. Work with various Daemons for at least a year before you rush to a Patron or Matron. Some people say five years, others two. It varies from practitioner to practitioner. Suffice to say, dedication, practice, and patience are key here.

Some other things to keep in mind:

  • You don’t need a Matron or Patron to be initiated or baptized – or to practice.
  • You can work Daemonolatry without a Patron or a Matron for years – or until the end of your life if you wish. Meaning you don’t HAVE to choose a Patron or Matron if you don’t want to. You may still end up with one whether you like it or not, but you don’t have to consent to that relationship if you don’t want it.
  • Some people will know who their Patron or Matron is immediately and will be right about it. Some people are naturally called to this path by their Patron or Matron. No two practitioner’s journey will be the same. Don’t compare yourself to others. Comparision is the thief of joy.
  • Jumping from Patron to Patron is not helpful spiritually and denotes a lack of patience, introspection, and personal devotion. Yes, you can change your mind later on, but it’s considered bad form in Traditional Daemonolatry. Being without is the wiser choice.
