An Interview with Andrieh Vitimus

I had the wonderful opportunity to interview magician Andrieh Vitimus for my blog over at The Quadrant and decided the folks who followed demonolatry.org would also find this interview enjoyable and interesting!

andrieh pic 2When did you first know you were a chaos magician?
A better question is when I first new I was a magician, since the two are inextricably linked. First, I was a complete skeptic when I started. When I was really younger, I had considered going into the priesthood of an Orthodox Eastern Rite Catholic church. Seriously considered it. I was one of those compassionate “gentle” souls. I even was an altar boy. When I went to an all boys catholic school, people were pretty vicious and rotten. To be blunt, if people could act with such cruelty and call themselves a Christian, I came to the conclusion all religions were bullshit, but especially Christianity. So I put all that stuff away, deciding to become a hard scientist, trying to understand my visions and dreams through a materialist psychological perspective. It worked for a while.

And then, it didn’t. You get to a point where the blood is dripping form your veins, madness has infected you, and you are trying to use every bit of psychology you have to avoid going in the asylum. The shadows torment you, and everything goes badly. You reach for a couple lifelines, and they tell you they are afraid of you, they can’t help you because they have physically seen the shadows too. With nothing left to loose, I drove down the road in one of the worst storms in Illinois listing to Ministry. Multiple tornados touch down in around me. Did I stop? No, I dared it not to move and spun up my turbo charged talon at 150 mph straight toward it. At that moment, something snaped inside. I connected with that Tornado. It moved.

I had no doubts that I was a magician then.

From the start, I was always interested in chaos magic. At the time, it was the only idea of magic ( it is not a system of magic in itself) that combined what I saw as scientific reasoning and skepticism without appealing to unneeded explanations of faith. Yes, there are mysteries but non-dogmatic skepticism will serve most people well.

How long have you been a magician?
15-18 years depending on how you count.

How long have you been a writer?
25 years. I was a published poet in another life and formally studied English writing.

Were there any other books/authors who influenced you early on?
Early on I was a big fan of Phil Hine, and to a lessor degree Peter Carroll. In addition to those books, I spent a tremendous amount of materials on Qigong, mostly through in person seminars (which was no small amount). Early on, after I got through the few rough patches, I was able to learn a tremendous amount from inner city conjure practitioners in Chicago, my extended family ( who came out of the woodwork from no where after the rough patches), and even various occult stores. Although by the time I started talking to other people after the rough start, I had mastered a lot of critical defensive practical magic skills such as cleansing, banishing and protecting a space. Nothing like adversity to teach you.

Since a lot of my readers are also authors, how much time did it take from writing your first book to having it published?
So it took me about 5 years to write the first book, and then about 2 years to go to publication.

What other careers have you had?
Or better still have? I am computer programmer, system administrator, do hypnosis, and currently manage a department.

Do you write under more than one name? Why?
I used to write under the name Pentilian. I currently, only have the one Pen Name. Pentilian unfortunately became a sacrifice substitution in a ritual that a name could die so I didn’t have to and no, I am not kidding about that one.

What finally influenced you to write a book?

Things didn’t go well for a while after the Tornado incident. It was not like the Shadows left me alone. They followed. I learned a lot about demons back in those days andandrieh chaos magick what happens when a real curse was thrown at you ( the why someone would do that is a whole story in itself, a novel that I will write). I learned through struggle. I took very basic techniques and refined them again and again till they always worked. I got better as a magician. The thing is that, most books on magic are not very useful in that situation. You do not know who to ask or about the culture of the occult. The magic takes so long to learn. Think about it, you do not have a mentor. Demons are hunting you and tormenting you. You are couch surfing because things are not going so well, and now spend 4 months learning the LBRP so you can get a moment of calmness and then your LBRP probably will not even work.

You have a choice too, do you decide to live or die and if you do live, what do you have to know? Most of the occult books I have just do not distill down the magic to useable bites. Hands On Chaos Magic was my attempt to write a training guide for people who to be blunt might be in a similar situation to what I went through and also my attempt to reveal the underlying keys of magic that I had worked through by that time ( Hands on Chaos Magic was written over 5 years ago, I’ve gotten better). I found that many faith based or dogmatic systems of magic just believe these answers will come to you over a few years of study, maybe. I just haven’t seen that happen. Essentially, it was trying to fill in the gaps of Peter Carroll’s Liber MMM and Liber KKK with more guidance.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?
I can be somewhat of a perfectionist. I had written a 150 book, then tossed it out and started to try to meet my original intention of having a good training manual. Essentially, in the first copy, I used way too much jargon. Stepping back into the book a second time, was really difficult.

What do you hope readers take with them after reading your book?
You can do it and start now. Ignore all the fear mongering out there. Sure their might be some bumps in the road, but the process of magic will change you. Embrace it and do it.

If you could give one bit of advice to beginning magicians, what would it be?
Research a little, do a lot. You will learn more by doing then you can from all the theorizing. All of the secrets in my first book are hidden in plain sight, they all become obvious if you are doing the exercises.

What’s something readers and fellow magicians would find fascinating about you?

I am a pretty down to earth person. Although my rituals are quite powerful, I am generally somewhat low key and grounded. I really never got over the idea that there are quite a few things larger then I might be although I do tend to be playful with the spiritual world. Being low key does not always serve me well in the PR department. I always have something going on and very much am a Magician first, and author second. At one time, I was very shy but have transformed my personality from those days.

What else would you like readers to know about you or your work?
I really live the path of magic, for better or worse. There is a huge difference between that and an academic magical thinking. Sometimes, I will do magic and it does not turn out quite how I planned. It makes for great stories and makes for great actual connections, however I do tend to have very little desire to talk to people who do ceremony with no real desire to do magic which is very much a thread in modern paganism.

How do your family and/or friends feel about your book or writing venture in general?
Some of family knows what I do, some do not. I have honestly found that the birth family members who are into the occult (which many are), are quite jealous over the fact. They also tend to be quite anti-author. That saddens me greatly, but it very like some parts of the occult that promote a certain view so it is not surprising. My life partner and friends are fully supportive and often get on me about not getting the next project done fast enough.

Where are you from?
Chicago. But Now I live in Ohio!

Has your life changed significantly since becoming a published writer?
I think the quality of the people I have met has greatly improved. I met my wonderful life partner, new and great friends and the fans are wonderful. Of course, Hands On Chaos Magic itself had some embedded spells in the text of the book almost all of which have come to pass.

Do you work on one project at a time? Or do you multi-task?
I multi-task… but I do it badly. I am trying to focus on actually getting projects done instead of the 20 or so somewhat worked on books lying around the house.

When not writing or practicing magic, how do you relax?
Nothing says fun like playing Starcraft II, and X-com with the step son. I drink Café Au Lait’s at Jazzy cafés and read books on business, psychology and fiction. I also do some drawing and occasionally play the piano. Of course, I occasionally like visiting the Goth clubs on occasion. Really, I love to go hiking with my step-kids as much as I can. Love the hiking. I plan to get back into Martial Arts.

Please tell us 5 miscellaneous facts about yourself.

  • Favorite Color: Red.
  • Favorite Café now destroyed due to Starbucks, Scenes.
  • Most hated food: Onions.
  • I am half-way to a black belt in Shuai Jiao.
  • I actually have a masters degree in computer science and am currently pursuing a MBA.

Tell us about www.magical30.com , how it got started, and the work that goes on there.
chaos 2Magical 30 came about for a few reasons. It comes from a simple idea that was something I noticed and was very supported by neurology. I noticed that physical manifestation becomes more likely after working with an entity repeatedly. I theorized that if you had a solid foundation in magic, you could make this type of physical manifestation happen after about 24-30 days of dedicated work using 30 minutes day. Of course, it does not always happen but with a higher likelihood, because it takes 30 days for your neurology to fully integrate new neuro-pathways. AKA it takes about 24-30 days for your brain to adapt to an entity fully. I realized, 30 days is just about the right amount of time to really break into and do magic and to start a whole process of doing magic. Around the same time, I started taking Gamification classes and studying motivation. The Magical 30 was born as a result, to try to get people to dip and do magic and put it into a game context to get people to start. That is the real goal, Get people Doing, not just theorizing.

Emotional Preparation

I’m convinced a lot of the failure in magick is due to the lack of emotional preparation on the part of the magician. In this I mean that the magician is either ready for the answers or changes the magick is meant to impart, or (s)he isn’t.

For example: Perhaps the magician seeks to become wealthy. However, wealth, for many of us, requires a far different mindset than continuing on the current path we may be on.

In instances like this, this is where preparation begins. The magician needs to find not only the willpower to manifest the change, but also needs to deeply analyze his/her self, habits, and emotion about a situation before (s)he seeks to change it.

We’ve all heard time and time again that it can take numerous tries before one is able to quit smoking or break a bad habit. Perhaps you’ve been fortunate enough to experience this yourself. That’s because those numerous tries cause a person to seek out their real motivations and to find that one thing that will help them change their life for the better. Weight loss works much the same way. People may have to try numerous times before they’re able to change the habits that caused them to gain weight to begin with.

Now let’s apply this to our example of wealth. Just like it can take many tries to learn how to break a bad habit, it can take us numerous tries to learn how to save money, or make money.

All things worth doing are worth doing well. It’s very unlikely that you’re going to work magick and suddenly a few billion dollars is going to fall into your lap. Instead, magick often works in more subtle ways by presenting the magus with opportunities. Whether or not you take those opportunities, or can recognize them for the opportunities they are, is part of the process where emotional readiness is imperative.

If your self-esteem lacks, you may not apply for the manager’s position that pays more. You may shy away from the suggestion that you publish that book. If you fear failure, you may react the same way to opportunity. Additionally, if you have fear, you may shy away from a more aggressive portfolio, instead going for more conservative investments that won’t net as much in the long run. You may find your willpower lacks when it comes to saving money to buy something and hence you always find yourself in debt. There are, literally, hundreds (perhaps even thousands) of reasons wealth magick, and other magicks, may not work for someone and it all starts at that emotional level.

The universe is mental and we do create our own realities.

So the next time you plan magick to manifest anything in your life, give your emotional preparation the same consideration (if not more) as the ritual itself. You may just find a different level of success.

Genealogy and Magic

I was looking back at my posts and realized I never filled anyone in with why I suddenly fell off the Earth. The pain I was trying to pray away definitely needed a little extra boost from science and modern medicine. I know my limits and I needed to concede. I ended up having my gallbladder removed in June. Then in July my grandmother passed away.

It has me heavily considering my family roots. While she was still alive I traced her family back to the early 1800s, now I’m stuck in the late 1700s. How big of a role do you think family blood plays in magic? Do you need to be the son of powerful magicians to be powerful? Do you need to be a go-getter with a strong will and good work ethic?

I think that genealogy gives you a base to work from but that strong will and work ethic is required to make anything of it. In my case I come from a shaky line of psychics on my father’s side, but I haven’t delved too far into that side of my family. If anyone in my immediate family has any sort of latent psychic ability it’s my brother. My mother’s side is what’s more interesting. I’ve found connection to Spanish settlers in Mexico. It’s a well known fact that when Spanish settlers came to the Americas they mingled with the people here to make mestizos – part European, part native American children.

I am highly interested in trying to figure out which tribe(s) my mother’s family mixed with and learning about the types of magic they employed. I have a feeling if I find something it may be a great source of inspiration and new techniques. My grandmother told me she’s Mayan, but the family tree doesn’t prove anything to that claim. Yet. I’m only as far back as the 1700s. Just some food for thought. Have any of you delved into your genealogy to find out your potential magical legacy? Or are you of the opinion that we shape our own abilities solely of our own volition?

Sacred Writing

Last month I talked about Sacred Words and Speech. I think it’s only fair to discuss sacred writing. If we follow the line of thinking that words have power, that power is amplified when those words are written, carved, or inscribed. The saying “the pen is mightier than the sword” did not come about for no reason, after all.

The ancients realized that by writing something down, or carving it into stone, it had the potential to survive for future generations. From written scrolls made of papyri, to the words carved on temple walls, they knew for certain one thing: writing words down gives them permanence. There is power in permanence.

This is why a lot of rituals ask you to create the seals or symbols, or to write the pacts down by hand. The act of writing something down gives it permanence. It solidifies the intent behind the Work.

This also lends insight into the importance of writing down one’s Work in the form of a journal. Yes, you could easily memorize your work, but could you imagine what would have happened if Dee or Crowley had never journaled? Knowing what we know now about what they wrote down, aren’t we happy they did?

While I don’t have any meaningful exercises for you this month, keep in mind the power of words and the intent behind everything we write. It’s always a good idea to be mindful when possible.

The Importance of Timing

I have always felt that timing was important. In business, in relationships, in practically everything. But more so than that, I have always believed there was a significance to the timing of certain events in my life. As if they were meant to happen at exactly that moment. And as I have grown older, I have begun to notice patterns in my own behavior that seem to correspond with certain times of the year. Are these two beliefs related, or are they merely coincidences that I am reading too much into? Could certain times of the year engender specific behaviors or trends that lead to corresponding life events? Many beliefs say this is the case, but personally, I wanted to look more closely at my own thoughts and actions.

At this time of year my thoughts are generally focused on the future and what will be done in the coming months, while as the seasons move forward, my thoughts and focus do as well. In the spring I am taking the first steps towards accomplishing the year’s objectives. Planting seeds so to speak. Summer is usually a flurry of activity for me, as I maintain and sustain what I have begun. Fall and early winter bring a focus on my goals, their progress, and eventual completion. After reflecting upon my prior behavior, I have realized that many of the transitions and changes in my life have been a result of this exact process. Whether it was a major move, a change in vocation, or simply a personal goal or aspiration, the ‘spark’ that got me motivated happened in the early part of the year. Throughout the spring I was actively doing whatever I could to get things rolling, and during summer I was constantly maintaining and building upon whatever I had already done. At the end of the year, things were either going well, and I was flush, or things had gone poorly and the end was near. Is it pure coincidence that this pattern perfectly emulates the cycle of the seasons, and nature itself? While I live a completely city-dwelling existence, would my thought process and actions not be the exact same as someone who worked close to the earth? Upon further inspection, is this not the progression of everything? The life cycle of the earth dominates everything that we are, and everything that we do. Any project, any undertaking, any life, will take on this exact progression. And so if that explains the behavior, what about the timing? Is it astrologically driven? Is it simply hard-wired into our existence as inhabitants of the Earth? After all of our advances and accomplishments, are our thoughts and processes still the same as they’ve been?

In Paths to Satan I talk about how many of the holidays and celebrations of the ancient civilizations were much more concerned with this natural cycle, than any other event. In fact the Deities that were venerated and worshiped during those celebrations were almost always directly associated with the corresponding season or cycle. Is not the worship of Demons, and Satan, in part the worship of the cycles and natural elements that they are associated with? Is not their worship, the worship of all that it means to be a part of this world, as well as the next? And if that is the case, is it not our duty to live our lives, pursue our destinies, and apply our magic, on Nature’s schedule?

Sleep Visitors

I have been suffering from sleep disorders now for over 7 years. I used to be able to sleep through an earthquake, thunderstorm. You name it – I’d sleep through it. Now, if I can join together 3 hours of kip, I’m lucky.

The interesting thing is, that with the sleep disorders have come new experiences. So far I have had hypnogogic visionary hallucinations, which while interesting didn’t actually mean anything per say – it may have been an overactive imagination. I find the auditory hallucinations much more interesting. I have had my name called, which I could swear was a family member waking me for work. I even answer, but turn around and the clock is showing 3am – interesting to note that most name calling happens at around the 3am mark. Is it my mind playing tricks, or should I try and communicate ?

Looking into the sleep disorders, I have found many more. Old Hag syndrome. The “Hat Man”. Shadow people. Who, or what are they ? Are they beings from another dimension ? Are they benevolent or malevolent or just simply visiting ? Coast to Coast AM with Art Bell has had some pretty interesting things on this subject. They have been described as anything from angels to demons. The Djinn have been blamed, but yet again so have the “Manitous” from Native American Spirituality.

I myself, while hearing voices, and the odd vision, have not had any visits from such beings – thirty years ago when I was a teenager is a different story and was different to what I am talking about now. Has anyone out there had any experiences ? What do you think – imagination or are the Shadow People real ? From what I have read, there seems to be more evidence to suggest they are real, but I would be most interested to hear people views on this.

The Sacred Word

I use a lot of profanity. A lot. I use fuck as a noun, a verb, a pronoun, an adverb and an adjective. I’m also fond of creative profanity like “cock blowing bitch fucker”, “twat-knocker”, and “cunt-cakes”. I also grew up in the family business (male dominated) where I was exposed to profanity daily from an early age. “Naughty” words don’t offend me or shock me. However, my study of magick has caused me to give more thought to the words I choose to use — and here’s why:

To the ancient Egyptians, words were sacred. Even the mere utterance of certain words was considered either sacred or magickal. They realized that words, whether spoken or written, had power. There was emotion — raw intent — behind words.

In Curses, Hexes & Crossing I discuss “curse words” and how even telling someone to go fuck themselves is, in actuality, a curse.

When you begin to analyse the power of words, you being to realize just how much they shape and mold us. Hurtful words may make us fearful or angry or even introspective or misanthropic. Words can make us sad or bring us joy. Words can conjure such powerful, raw emotions that sway our actions and reactions.

It’s too bad we don’t always pay heed to our words and the power they have. Especially when spoken in anger. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t try.

Yes, there are other factors to consider, too. How something is said is just as important as what is said. Tone, expression, body language. All of these things relay intent.

An Experiment:
For just one week, I dare you to try to be mindful of every word that falls from your lips. Think out each response and its potential consequences. How does each thing you say affect those around you? Do you see any patterns emerging? Are you noticing you’re always a cheerleader, or always the party-pooper? Are you negative? Remember that moods are contagious and the laws of attraction can be applied to what we say.

Sometimes analyzing what we say, and how we say it, when interacting with others is the first step to discovering how to make small changes in our lives to attract more positivity, abundance, and opportunity.

NOTE: If the first part of this post offended you, I do apologize, but I was going for offensive to prove my point. Thanks for reading!

Clarification

It has come to my attention that people are erroneously thinking that we’re closing down this site, right here, the one you’re looking at. That is NOT the case.

demonolatry.org is not going anywhere. We’re simply closing down the old OFS Forum, currently the demonolatry.org forum located at ofssacerdos.proboards.com.

This site will stay just the way it is. You can still comment on blogger’s posts. You will still be able to access files and all that.  Thank you for your attention and I apologize for any confusion I may have caused.
